RWANDA – “LAND OF A THOUSAND HILLS”
The proverbial ‘thousand hills’ are literally scattered through the nation, fertile, green and beautifully terraced. The people are some of the world’s most charming and hospitable, whose ancient culture comes to life through traditional music, songs and dance. Interestingly, there is still more to explore: volcanic mountains, pristine lakes, numerous rivers, amazing birdlife, primates and wildlife, and a fascinating history.
Day 1: City Tour and Transfer to the Volcanoes National Park.
On your arrival at Kigali Airport in Rwanda, you will be picked up by our driver guide who will drive Kigali City, Rwanda known as, the land of “a thousand hills”. The city is very spotless and the people are very hospitable and friendly. The first place that travelers visit during the tour around the city is the Genocide Memorial Center; this provides you with information on the genesis of the genocide. You will also visit the National Museum and many other eye-catching sites within and around the city. You will also enjoy a thrilling drive through the beautiful terraced hills as you head to the Volcanoes National Park. It is a well-known habitat to the Mountain Gorillas.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking.
In the morning after your breakfast, you will to proceed to the Park Headquarters for a briefing regarding gorilla trekking by the park rangers. You will hike through the verdant jungle looking for mountain gorillas. Some amount of physical fitness is needed during this activity since it involves a number of climb hills. The experience is tedious but impressive when you finally face these Mountain Gorillas. You’ll see them in families as they go about their day-to-day routine activities.
After trekking, head back to the lodge for relaxation. If time as well as energy allows, you will go for a nature walk to see the beautiful twin lakes as well as cultural walk to interact with the local people. You will be entertained by these local people in their traditional dances and songs.
Day 3: Golden Monkey Trekking and transfer back to Kigali Airport.
After an early breakfast, you will go for golden monkeys trekking. Before meeting these primates, you’ll see some other monkeys, wildlife and plants. Eventually you will come face to face with the golden monkeys. You’ll observe them play and hop from one branch to the other; it is such an amazing memorable encounter. After, you will drive back to Kigali Airport for your departure flight.
Day 1: Travel to Volcanoes national park
In the morning, you will either be picked up from the airport on your arrival or your hotel depending on where you will be. Our driver will then take you for a short Kigali city tour exploring the major historic and cultural sites like the Kigali Genocide Memorial Center, Craft markets in Kigali, Kandt National Museum, and presidential museum depending on the time. After visiting some of these sites you will then have lunch. After, you will start the journey to the home of the mountain gorillas in volcanoes national park.
Day 2: Gorilla Tracking in Volcanoes national park
In the morning after your breakfast, you will to proceed to the Park Headquarters for a briefing regarding gorilla trekking by the park rangers. In the afternoon after gorilla experience, you will go to visit the musanze caves.
Day 3: Cultural tour at Iby’iwacu cultural village
After your breakfast, you will explore a bit of culture at the Iby’iwacu cultural village to have a taste of the history and culture of Rwanda. Some of the members of this cultural village are former poachers who depended on the forest for survival. Thereafter, you will then be transferred to Kigali Airport to take your flight back home.
Day 1: Transfer to Akagera National Park
You will be picked up either from your Hotel in Kigali or the airport. Then our guide will transfer you to Akagera National Park to begin your Wildlife Safari in Rwanda. While on the way, you will pass through the country’s remarkable landscape which will give you views of the country’s beauty and also the life style of its people.
On your arrival in the park, you will go for a short southern Lake Ihema game drive. Look out for animals such as elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles and many more like Antelopes.
Day 2: Morning game drive and Boat ride on Lake Ihema
After your breakfast, you will go for a Northern game drive in search of animals that you may have missed out in the previous game drive including the newly introduced lions form South Africa. It is not a guarantee that all the animals can be seen during the game drive.
Return back to the lodge for a relaxation as well as lunch. After lunch, you will go for a boat ride on Lake Ihema which will offer you great views of the surrounding areas; hills and swamps. Expect to see Hippos, crocodiles and more bird species.
Day 3: Nature walk and transfer to Kigali Airport
After your breakfast, you will go for a nature walk in search of different bird species. Thereafter transfer to Kigali Airport for your flight.
Day 1: Kigali City tour
Following breakfast have a city tour and visit the Kigali Memorial Genocide Centre: which well exhibits Rwanda’s the history of the genocide on video shows, see photographs, read some written accounts see a number of articrafts, read personal testimonies as well as exhibitions. The exhibition shows a section referred to as wasted lives which refer to the genocides plus holocausts in Southwestern Africa, Bosnia, Armenia and Cambodia. After your lunch drive to Volcanoes National Park to trek gorillas.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking
In the morning, you will go for the highlight of your safari, Gorilla trekking experience. Parc national des Volcans is the best location to trek these uncommon yet fascinating mountain gorilla in Africa. This park is found on Rwanda’s border with DR Congo, and Uganda. This chain of mountains has 7 volcanoes and the Karisimbi is the highest standing over 4500 meters. The slopes covered with bamboo and rainforest vegetation are home to some of the last surviving mountain gorillas that were first studied comprehensively by George Schaller and, not so many years ago by Dian Fossey who carried out her study there the 13 years until she died mysteriously at Bisoke. There are 4 habituated gorilla families within Parc National des Volcans, counting the Susa Group having 35 individuals. The other gorilla families are: the Sabinyo having 13 individuals, the Amahura having 16 individuals as well as Group 13 having only 6. It is not very challenging to find them and each gorilla family can be visited by a maximum of 8 people each day, hence availing 32 permits each day. After gorilla tracking, return to your hotel and relax.
Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking
After your breakfast drive to Gisenyi for golden monkeys trekking. After lunch enjoy a community walk to interact with the resident who may actually entertain you with cultural dances. You may choose to observe the locals brewing local beer from yellow bananas.
Day 4: Transfer to Lake Kivu for another Adventure
After breakfast and drive to Lake Kivu for a boat ride around the Virgin Islands like the Napoleon’s Hat Island and there you can ascend to the peak of the hat to view the thousands of Angola bats in the blue skies. Following lunch continue to Butare the intellectual centre of Rwanda to visit the national university plus the Institute of Scientific Research as well as the national museum.
Day 5: Nyungwe Forest walk
in the morning, you will explore Nyungwe Forest which is among the greatly safeguarded montane rainforests in the whole of Africa. It offers breathtaking scenery looking over the forest plus Lake Kivu, in addition to sights to the north of the far away volcanoes of Parc National des Virunga. After lunch, drive to Nyanza the historical seat of the long ago kings of Rwanda. Visit this palace and listen to the traditional story-telling done by village elders. This warrior’s dance is a gem of the choreographic heritage of this country, adorned with a lion mane completed with sisal fiber plus rings of bells worn in their ankles together with an angelic choir and an exciting rhythm, this is the type of cultural dance which will be organized if you request.
Day 7: Return to Kigali
After breakfast, you will drive to Kigali airport for your departure flight.
Day 1: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
You will have an early breakfast and travel to Butare, the second largest city of Rwanda. Butare is regarded as the intellectual city of Rwanda. It hosts the National Museum and several academic and research institutions. On your way to Butare you will visit the former King’s palace at Nyanza which was the seat of the feudal monarchy. You will visit the National Museum rated as one of the well set-up if not the finest ethnographic museum of East Africa and renowned for its source of information on the cultural history of Rwanda and the region. You will continue the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park and check in at the lodge of your booking for dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest
You will wake up very early in the morning (5.30am) and report at the Nyungwe Park headquarters for the 6.00am briefing on the chimpanzee tracking rules. You will after the briefing start the trek in search of the chimpanzees in the verdant rain forest. During the trek you will have the chance to see other primates such as the Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, the Grey cheeked Mangabey, L’hoests monkey and the Owl faced monkey. You will return to your Hotel for a late lunch and have the rest of the day to yourself to relax.
Day 3: Guided Nature Walk in Nyungwe Forest
You will have an early breakfast and set off for a guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and various species of birds. This forest is home to about three hundred bird species including the rare Rwenzori turaco and the black and white casqued hornbill. A walk in the forest is a whole learning experience about the botany, ornithology and ecology of the forest. You will return to your lodge for lunch after which you will transfer to Volcanoes National Park. You will have your dinner and overnight at the lodge of your booking.
Day 4: Gorilla trekking
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on gorilla tracking rules. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas. After gorilla trekking experience, you will be returned to the lodge for lunch. You will, later in the afternoon, be taken on a nature walk either to the twin lakes or musanve cave
Day 5: Golden Monkey tracking and transfer to Kigali Airport
You will set off after breakfast to track the rare Golden monkeys in Parc Nationale Des Volcanoes. This activity will take you the whole morning and you will also be able to see other primate species such as vervet monkeys, baboons, and a variety of bird species and butterflies. The guide will explain to you how the primates behave and about the fauna and flora in this park. You will return to your hotel for lunch and drive to Kigali Airport for your flight back home.
Day 1: Travel to Parc Nationale Des Volcanoes
Start your Rwanda Gorilla & Chimpanzee safari experience with an early breakfast and drive to Parc Nationale des Volcanoes. You will check in at the lodge and have lunch and take some rest. You will spend the rest of the day sightseeing and relaxing around the hotel till dinner time.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking
You will have an early breakfast and report at the Park Headquarters for a briefing on the rules to be observed during Gorilla trekking. You will be allocated a Gorilla family to track and guides to lead you to the Gorillas.
Day 3: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park
After an early breakfast, you will transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. You will have lunch at the hotel of your booking after which be taken on guided nature walk in the forest to see a variety of animals and some of the three hundred bird species found here, which include the Rwenzori Turaco and black and white casqued hornbill. You will also be able to spot large groups of Colobus monkeys.
Day 4: Chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest
You will wake up very early in the morning and report at the Nyungwe Park headquarters for the 6.00am briefing on the Golden monkey tracking rules. You will after the briefing start the trek in search of the Golden monkeys in the verdant rain forest. During the trek you will have the chance to see other primates such as the Rwenzori colobus, Silver monkey, Chimpanzees, the Grey cheeked Mangabey, L’hoests monkey and the Owl faced monkey. After tracking you will be driven to Kigali Airport to catch your flight back home.
